Myall Creek Commemoration Trips
From 2022, the Friends of Myall Creek National Committee and George have partnered to deliver guidance and guides throughout the commemoration’s long weekend of truth-telling.
Schools and Myall Creek
Each year hundreds of people from across the country gather on the Sunday of the June long weekend to commemorate the unprovoked massacre of at least twenty-eight Wirrayaraay women, children and old men by a group of stockmen on Myall Creek Station in 1838.
The Myall Creek Memorial on the Bingara-Delungra Road near Bingara was erected in June 2000 by a group of Aboriginal and non-indigenous people working together in an act of reconciliation. In 2008 the massacre site and Memorial were included on the National Heritage Register and also received NSW state heritage listing in 2010.
George and his team are committed to encouraging schools to attend the Myall Creek Commemoration annually, especially as student numbers have increased in recent years. They stand proudly alongside people from Gamilaraay Country (and beyond) in reconciliation, deep listening, careful reflection, solidarity and with a hope for the future that is accompanied by considered action.
From 2022, George began a partnership with the Friends of Myall Creek National Committee in raising awareness and actively promoting the site and the annual commemoration to primary and secondary school students and staff.
